Recognizing the substantial role art in public places plays in enhancing the beauty of our city, Santa Barbara Beautiful engages in multi-tiered support of both temporary and permanent art installations which further this evolving community resource.

Over the last few years, Santa Barbara Beautiful allocated funds:
• for a Public Art DVD "In Plain Sight" which tours public art installations. This DVD is available to residents and visitors at the City’s public information booths, the Chamber of Commerce and on-line.

• supporting the 2006 and 2008 temporary sculptural installations on State Street known as the State of the Art Gallery.
• for a grand mosaic at the new Santa Barbara Airport.
Annually, SBB bestows the Hugh Petersen ‘Art in Public Places’ award, which recognizes significant artistic contribution to the city’s built environment. A few of the many recipients are:
2002 The Aris Demetrios Mentor’s Fountain at Santa Barbara City College
2005 Marge Dunlap It’s Raining Fountain at Las Aves near the Bird Refuge
2007 Alfaro Siqueiros Mexico Today Fresco in front of Santa Barbara Museum of Art
2009 Richard McLaughlin and Benjamin Bottoms’ Solstice Celebration Murals at the Granada Garage
2010 The Chumash Syuxtun Story Circle mosaic Public Art at West Beach on Cabrillo Boulevard across from Ambassador Park
Santa Barbara Beautiful also encourages junior artists. The winning posters of its annual Arbor Day Poster Contest for fifth graders are showcased to the public. SBB sponsors youth artists for the I Madonnari chalk painting festival at the City’s historic Mission.
Perhaps one of SBB’s most significant contributions to Art in Santa Barbara is its push to initiate the development of a Public Art and Culture Master Plan, the establishment of which will ensure that community art installations are an integral part of the City’s future development. |
