Arbor Day Poster Contest
Santa
Barbara Beautiful was a proud local sponsor of the
Arbor Day 2008 National Poster Contest for the eighth consecutive year. This
year’s theme was
“Trees
are Terrific … Inside and Out!!”
From its humble beginnings in 2000 as a pilot project, the
fledgling program has become an integral component of outreach
to the schools. This year two public school districts
participated along with with a local private school and
the city's Recreation Dept. After-School Program. The
contest is open to all fifth graders in the USA.
This year’s local winners (with their families
and school officials) were introduced to the Mayor and City
Council in honor of California Arbor Day during the presentation
of an Arbor Day Proclamation to Santa Barbara Beautiful for its
work planting over 10,000 trees in the community.
2008 Arbor Day National Poster Contest school
participants: Adams; Cleveland; Cold Spring; Franklin; Harding;
Marymount; and City of SB Recreation Dept. After-School Program.
The local winners of the national contest also
competed at the State level in Sacramento. The winning poster
represented California in the national competition held at the
National Arbor Day Foundation headquarters in Nebraska. The
national poster contest winner was announced in April.

"Celebrating Arbor Day"
A tree planting and awards ceremony –
featuring the poster contest winner- was held at each school in
honor of National Arbor Day.
